On Wednesday, Innovator International hosted an interactive webinar exploring the financial requirements of the Innovator Founder Visa route. Led by Richard Harrison, alongside James Roach and Karen Hockenhull, the session addressed 12 of the most frequently asked financial questions, covering everything from initial funding and investment to business sustainability and the requirements for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR). The session also generated a large number of questions from attendees, allowing the team to explore some of the more complex financial considerations facing entrepreneurs.
One of the key messages was that there is no minimum investment requirement when applying for an Innovator Founder Visa endorsement. Although the previous route required £50,000, this requirement was removed in 2023. Instead, applicants must demonstrate that they have sufficient funding and resources to develop their proposed business to a sustainable position. The amount required will vary considerably depending on the nature of the business, its development stage and the resources already available. The team also discussed external investment, family funding and grants, emphasising that applicants must provide credible evidence of available funds and should not rely on speculative future investment or grant awards to make their business financially viable.
The discussion then turned to the financial requirements for ILR, particularly the £50,000 investment and expenditure criterion, which remains one of the optional settlement targets. The team explained the distinction between demonstrating sufficient funds at the initial application stage and evidencing that £50,000 has been invested and spent on developing the business for settlement purposes. Examples of potentially eligible expenditure included product development, marketing, equipment and other activities directly supporting business growth. Attendees also raised questions about salaries, premises, vehicles, reinvested profits and expenditure involving overseas suppliers. The importance of maintaining clear financial records and ensuring that expenditure genuinely contributes to business development was repeatedly emphasised.
Finally, the team explored the wider question of what constitutes a financially sustainable business when applying for ILR. Rather than focusing on a specific revenue figure, the assessment considers the progress made against the original business plan, the direction of growth and, importantly, whether the business can sustain itself financially without further investment. The team stressed that entrepreneurs should focus on building genuinely successful businesses rather than simply meeting individual visa targets. Good financial management, realistic forecasting and accurate records from the outset are essential. The session concluded by highlighting the guidance, resources and additional business support available through Innovator Pulse, including expert sessions and programmes designed to help endorsed entrepreneurs develop their businesses and work towards settlement.
